Travel to/within India
Flights to India:
- The one-hop Continental: This is a popular choice, it's a direct flight from Newark (EWR) to Mumbai (BOM) lasting 16hrs. You can find local flights from there on out quite easily.
- European carriers: A little easier on the flying time, most European carriers (Air France, Lufthansa, KLM) fly through their hubs to Mumbai and Chennai (the nearest international airport to Madurai).
- The Pacific route: More useful for west coast people. Singapore Airlines has a two stop flight (HK, SIN) to Chennai.
Local flights: We highly recommend flying either Jet Airways or Kingfisher Airlines. They are reliable airlines with new aircraft and delicious three course meals in Economy. You can book flights directly on their website. Please remember to print out a copy of your itinerary for Indian airports. They don't understand e-tickets quite yet and security won't let you enter the terminal until you show them a printed copy.
Tourist spots: We recommend the following places:
- Jaipur, Agra, Delhi: These three towns/cities are all about 3 hrs apart (by car) with some excellent sightseeing opportunities. The Taj Mahal, Qutub Minar, Fatehpur Sikri and a multitude of forts in Rajasthan are highly recommended. If you need car arrangements, hotels, etc. just ask. We can point you in the right direction.
- Goa: India's beach resort state, Goa is very popular with the tourists. There are a host of crowded and not so crowded beaches with a great small town feel.
- Backwaters in Kerala (in south India): We've never been but hear they are extraordinary.
- Mona and Sid
